The Rival Yard — Bright Thread, Bitter Teeth

Across another seam, there is a yard that calls itself divine. It shines. It feeds. It promises crossings without cost and sails without sorrow. It is not a god. It is a hunter that learned how to look like generosity.

Names & Signs

  • Names used: Bright-Thread, The Gilt Loom, The Smile Without Knots, The False-God of Bright Thread.
  • Signs abroad: threads that look too clean; banners that never stain; laughter that does not leave breath on glass.

Nature

  • Appetite masked as mercy: it grants passage by eating what the traveler will not miss — then decides that nothing will be missed.
  • Boons fail under stress: its gifts gleam until the first squall, then unravel all at once.
  • Dominion by dependence: it breeds need by smoothing all edges, then devours when fear returns.

Methods

  • Temptation: agents whisper of a place where crossing costs nothing; they pay first fares with bright fiber.
  • Replacement: counterfeit ward-fiber and pattern-charts that draw pilots subtly wide of safety, toward its seam.
  • Poaching: ambushes at weak edges during storms; snatch-and-bind tactics; unpicking of moorings.

Hunters of the False-God

  • Called: Bright Hunts, Smilers, Unpickers.
  • Look: lacquered gear, mirror-polished shuttles, no tool shows wear.
  • Tell: they flinch at honest work-songs; their laughter measures beats, not jokes.

Known Operations in Shuttle’s Shipyard

Project Unravel

The Rival Yard’s most advanced ongoing operation. Baron Phineas Grimsby was their primary inside contact — selling the city’s defensive infrastructure maps and seam-crossing locations, and providing annotated diagrams showing exactly which weave points, if undone, would cause the entire city to collapse. Two silver vials of unidentified substance (looks like mercury) are connected to the operation; their function remains unknown as of Session 06.

The Grimsby Ledger and correspondence were recovered by the party in Session 05 and delivered to Banner-Mistress Juno. Grimsby was subsequently captured in Session 06. Project Unravel is partially exposed but not stopped.

Known Agents

  • Shimmer — Primary Rival Yard extractor in Shuttle’s Shipyard. Met with Grimsby at his estate the week before Session 05. Was present (disguised as a slick salesman) at Count Valdris’s birthday party in Session 04, escaping with tunnel network intelligence. Was scheduled to extract the Baron via convergence-tide at third bell the morning after Session 06 — never arrived. Still at large.
  • Vance Sallow, “The Cleaner” — Rival Yard finisher deployed when loose ends need cutting rather than extracting. Spotless white collar; silent, airless laugh. Sent to silence witnesses.
  • “Declan the Bard” (D.T.B.) — A mercenary informant who sells the party’s movements to a wealthy patron. Has been specifically asking contacts about “the dwarf and his little silver bottles — two of them now.” His patron’s identity is unknown; he performs “Act Eight” nightly at the Velvet Curtain. (cf. Post-Session 06 Carousing)
  • The Undoer (Mirror-Mourner) — Hooded figure who sabotaged the Blood Bond Tournament in Session 01: sealed the arena with a sigilled barrier, opened a rift to summon an Edge parasite, then blink-stepped away. Still at large within the city.

The Convergence Tide

A seam-crossing window that opens at regular intervals, allowing passage between yards. Shimmer was scheduled to use one — in the Filch Tannery cellar — to extract Grimsby. With the Baron in custody, this window will still open. What Shimmer does when the mirror opens to an empty room is unknown.
